Kawthaung, a charming town nestled along Myanmar’s southernmost tip, serves as a delightful introduction to the country. As the starting point for many excursions into the Mergui Archipelago, Kawthaung exudes old-world charm, with its narrow winding roads and vibrant waterfront markets. Stepping into Kawthaung feels like a journey back to the height of British colonialism in Southern Asia.
Once known as Victoria Point by the British, Kawthaung was once part of Siam, modern-day Thailand. The first Siamese settlements in what is now Myanmar were located near Kawthaung and the Maliwan district. In the latter part of the 19th century, Arab and Malay traders also arrived in Myanmar to trade and established a port on the northern side of the Kraburi estuary.
Today, Kawthaung’s culture is predominantly Thai, although both Burmese and Thai influences are evident in the region. Most of the inhabitants work in Ranong’s growing fishing industry or in the booming tourist industry in Phuket. The language spoken here is predominantly Thai, and the baht is the accepted currency. Kawthaung’s unique blend of Burmese and Thai people, thanks to its location on the Thailand border, makes it a truly delightful place to visit.
