MYEIK (MERGUI)

Myeik (Mergui)

Myeik, also known as “Bake” by locals, was once called Mergui during the colonial era. Situated in the southernmost part of Myanmar on a peninsula extending into the Andaman Sea, Myeik is a bustling city and the largest in the Tanintharyi Region.

Myeik’s economy primarily revolves around fishing, and its strategically significant port has been a hub of trade for the past 500 years. The city is adorned with beautiful pagodas, Buddhist temples, historical wooden architecture, and lively streets.

One of the town’s most captivating attractions is its lively morning fish market.

Reaching Myeik is convenient by air from Yangon, with a flight time of approximately 2 hours. Alternatively, you can fly from Myeik to Dawei, which takes about 30 minutes. However, the most intriguing journey is the overland safari by car, which takes about 8 hours. The scenic drive offers breathtaking views, and you can stop at villages along the way to rest and interact with the local people.
